The Flag of Suriname was legally adopted on 25 November 1975, upon the independence of Suriname. Prior to that, there are two different designed flags. The first designed flag represented the Europeans, Africans, East Indians, Chinese, and Americans. However, the Surinamese did not agree with the design of the first flag, because the flag was lacking the national unity of the country and determined to design another flag through a national competition in 1959. Moreover, in 1986, all national anthem, national flag, and the national coat of arms are officially accepted by the Surinamese. The flag of Suriname was raised for the first time on the Independence Day of the Republic of Suriname. Moreover, there is a legal requirement for the vessels to raise the flag of Suriname when visiting another country, this is to reduce miscommunication between other countries. The flag of Suriname was raised with pride in the war against the violence of women that is located in the Caribbean. It is formed by a horizontal tri-band of green (top and bottom) and red (double width) with large white border and a large yellow five-pointed star centered on the red band.
